USA Car Sales Jan-Jun 2017

GM has been the top brand for so many decades. I have data going back to 1946 and GM was easily the top selling brand back then. Fast forward to 2017 and GM still the biggest but the market share has never been lower since WWII at least. Ford is pressing hard but still back some way.

Sales were down 3% in June, cars took a big hit with a -13% but trucks lessened the impact through its +4% improvement. YTD cars are doing poorly as the -11.4% clearly shows. Light trucks grew 4.6%. The swing from cars is in full swing. 3.6 million cars to 5 million trucks says it all.

In such a large market, things change slowly so even small differences need to be noted. Subaru slipped past Kia, Land Rover moved ahead of Volvo, Tesla'a estimate figure had it overtake MINI and Jaguar did likewise to Fiat. One big mover was Alfa Romeo, which was no surprise with new models available.

The chart below shows a % symbol that represents market share. The +/- column is increase or decrease based on the first six month's market share of 2017 against the full 2016 year.
