Lada is the brand for the Russian car manufacturer AvtoVAZ. It was started in the 1960's and by 1970 was making cars under licence to Fiat. It was immediately successful and production rose quickly. Over time things deteriorated and the company ended up in poor shape. In 2008 Renault bought a share of the company and has since taken a controlling interest. Renault is now issuing sales data for Lada so we can see into that side of things. To my knowledge, this wasn't available to the public before.
Restructuring of the company has been painful but necessary to move forward. Sales dropped due to that fact but also because of a slump in the Russian car market. In 2017, with the local market showing signs of revival and improved product, sales are growing. Most Ladas are sold within Russia and what Renault's exports plans may be I'm unsure.
Sales so far this year are up 12% to 150,000 units YTD. The Granta model is the best selling with 44,300 sold but sales were down 2% and share of total sales falling just under 30%. The car is a subcompact saloon and hatchback that started sales at the end of 2011.
The Vesta was introduced in 2015 and sales were up 53% for the year so far and 35,600 found homes. It's a compact car sold in saloon and estate variants. One other to note is the XRAY which is a 5-door crossover? hatchback which has been sold since early 2016 (see picture).
